The Issue
The devastating impact of corruption, kleptocracy, and human rights violations on ordinary Jamaican citizens, particularly the poor and marginalized, is a stark reality. As Jamaicans who care deeply about “Jamrock” and our people, we are compelled to seek international assistance to influence the necessary change.
Jamaica is ranked 73 out of 180 on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (2024), indicating a significant problem with corruption. We cannot continue to ignore this issue that is so deeply embedded in our nation’s fabric, affecting every aspect of life for Jamaicans.
Kleptocracy—a government characterized by rampant greed and corruption—further exacerbates these issues, concentrating wealth among a small Jamaican elite while the wider population suffers.
Moreover, human rights organizations such as Amnesty International have regularly documented allegations of human rights abuses, including unlawful killings, unconstitutional detention, and ill-treatment by the Jamaican Constabulary Force.
The Magnitsky Act, a significant law first employed by the United States, grants pertinent nations the legal framework to impose visa bans and asset freezes on government officials involved in bribery, corruption, and serious human rights abuses. Utilizing this Act against Jamaican government officials is a vital step towards cleansing our system and embarking on a path of the promised “good governance” and justice.
We, therefore, call upon the U.S., U.K., EU, and Canada to review our claims and apply the Magnitsky Act to combat corruption, kleptocracy, and human rights violations in Jamaica. By signing this petition, you are standing up for transparency, accountability, and justice for all Jamaicans. Please, lend your voice and help us bring about this much-needed change — for the sake of our country, our citizens, and our future.
